Tracking Your Platelets Counts

One part of managing low platelets is tracking your platelet counts. Your platelet counts help your doctor learn how you are doing and which treatment is right for you. Your platelet counts also help you and your doctor know if your treatment is working. You can help your doctor by:

When to test your platelet count

Your doctor and nurse will help you decide when to have your platelet count tested.

A blood test is used to measure your platelet count. For this test, a small amount of blood will be taken. The number of platelets in that amount of blood are then counted. This test may be done in your doctor's office or by a local lab. First, find out which labs your insurance company prefers that you use. Your insurance company may cover lab costs only if you use a preferred lab. Talk to your insurance provider to learn about preferred labs in your area.

Tracking your results

After having your platelet count measured, it is important to keep track of your results. You may want to use a chart, such as the one below. Be sure to bring your results to your next office visit.

Tracking your results
Your doctor or nurse will probably order a blood test monthly in order to check your platelet count. Look for a lab that is close to home or work. If your platelet count is less than 30,000 talk with your doctor and nurse to learn about treatment options to increase your platelet count.
