What is ITP?
ITP is one cause of low platelets. With ITP, the body may not make enough platelets or it may destroy too many platelets.
ITP is sometimes called idiopathic and sometimes called immune thrombocytopenic purpura. Idiopathic means the cause of the disease is unknown. Because more is now known about how ITP affects the immune system, some doctors are calling ITP 'immune' (i-MUNE) thrombocytopenic purpura.
Think 30,000: Expert guidelines recommend treatment when your platelet count is below 30,000. If your platelet count is less than 30,000, it's time to talk with your doctor and nurse about treatment. Remember: the lower your platelet count, the greater your risk for bruising and bleeding.
