As a person with ITP, you may hear a lot about your platelet counts. It’s natural to wonder: what do all these numbers mean to me? The chart below shows what your platelet count may mean to your diagnosis and treatment.
| Your Platelet Count | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| 150,000 – 450,000* | Normal platelet count |
| Less than 150,000* | You have low platelets. Your doctor will check your platelet count often and watch you over time |
| 30,000 – 50,000* | You have low platelets. Your doctor may talk with you about treatment options and next steps |
| Less than 30,000* | You have low platelets. Your doctor will likely start treatment |
*Per microliter of blood
When choosing a treatment that is right for you, your doctor and nurse will consider your platelet count as well as your signs, symptoms and daily activities.
Think 30,000: Expert guidelines recommend treatment when your platelet count is below 30,000. If your platelet count is less than 30,000, it's time to talk with your doctor and nurse about treatment. Remember: the lower your platelet count, the greater your risk for bruising and bleeding.
